Intel Plans $15 Billion Stock Offering Amid Surging AI Demand

Intel announced on Monday a proposed $15 billion common stock offering as customer demand for artificial intelligence computing power accelerates. The chipmaker said the funds will support general corporate purposes, including capital expenditures and working capital, while helping it pursue growth opportunities in areas such as physical AI, purpose-built silicon, and advanced packaging. Underwriters will also have a 30-day option to purchase an additional $2.25 billion in shares.

The move comes as Intel capitalizes on a sharp rebound in its business and stock performance. Shares fell about 3.5% to 4% in morning trading following the announcement, a typical reaction to equity dilution, even as the stock has surged roughly 175% so far in 2026 and quintupled over the past year. Last month the company reported its fastest revenue growth in nearly 15 years and raised its full-year capital spending guidance to $20 billion, citing strong customer demand. Finance chief David Zinsner noted that most of the spending will go toward factory tooling and that the company is preparing for a “meaningful increase” in 2027.

The broader AI infrastructure boom is driving the need for more capacity. Technology giants are pouring money into data centers and related hardware, with industry capital expenditures expected to reach $765 billion this year and climb toward $1.2 trillion in 2027, according to Goldman Sachs estimates. Intel, which has benefited from rising demand for its central processing units in the data center segment as AI agents become more prevalent, is also one of the few U.S. companies operating advanced chip fabrication plants—a strategic advantage reinforced by government support for domestic manufacturing.

Company executives framed the offering as a way to maintain a strong balance sheet and investment-grade rating while aligning investments with clear customer demand and return expectations. By raising equity after a significant stock rally, Intel aims to fund the expansion needed to meet the next wave of AI-related growth without overextending its finances. Whether the fresh capital translates into sustained market share gains will depend on execution in manufacturing and securing larger external foundry customers, but the timing reflects confidence that the AI demand surge has further room to run.
